A few tips.

When in battle, don't stay idle for very long as the enemy will 
lock into your position and make an attack.

Try and avoid meeting the enemy in a congetsed street as this will
obstruct the fuel man from getting to your craft.

Until you get used to gaining the pods, share the game controls with
the co-pilot.

In general defensive items are necessary to win, as long as you move
and hover enough to avoid incoming fire.  During copilot selection in
profiles, the confidential section lets you see how the computer is
going to play.

Use lasers and shells to destroy airbourne enemies.
Save bombs for ground assaults.
Also save some rockets and missiles for the last enemy in each city.
